What Is it About Science...

that makes all leaders want to be at the forefront? In reading Joy Hakim's The Story of Science: Aristotle Leads the Way, I notice that Alexander wants a center of learning and builds Alexandria. Then Harun al-Rashid wants his vast empire to include art and learning and so his son, al-Mahmun, founds the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. Charlemagne wants the same. What is it about science and art that makes leaders think it shows how superior their realms are? Is that why were in the space race with Russia 50 years ago? Hmm....
