My eight year-old began ball room dancing lessons about three months ago. We've tried soccer, girl scouts, and karate. This was the first activity that made it past six weeks without a refusal to participate. It was originally set up specifically for homeschoolers (midday during the week) and was $5 per dance lesson (once a week). Not only did she enjoy it, it was inexpensive, and she got to dance with a cute boy. There were six girls and four boys--which was not too much of an issue because the male teacher would dance and everyone alternated partners.
Early this month, the mother of the three boys decided they were ready to go to the next step--preparing to compete! They are now attending lessons three times a week, a two hour practice on Friday nights, and bought the appropriate ball room dancing shoes. My girl was intrigued by this idea (though we don't know how partnerships will shake out--whether she'll dance with the boy she's been dancing with currently or if we would need to include another). I can't do three lessons a week, but I'm trying for two. The Friday night dance practice goes from 9 PM until 11 PM. Usually she's asleep by 8:30 PM, so we'll see how long she'll keep that up!
